The small picturesque fisherman's village located at the north-western coast of Sardinia counts 800 inhabitants. The village arose in 1885 when 45 fisherman families were evacuated from the island Asinara so that the kingdom of Italy could build a prison and a hospital for cholera patients on this island.
The hospital and prison no longer exist, but the prison has served over 100 years as the “guard” of the island. Thanks to its existence the island has remained an untouched paradise and has not lost any of its beauty. Asinara is nowadays a natural reserve (Parco Nazionale Dell’Asinara) where many animals live. Excursions are possible on a daily basis from Stintino to this beautiful area, that are definitely worth it!
Culture
Originally the inhabitants of Stintino are fishermen. An annual excitement for the fishermen was fishing for tuna. Nowadays this no longer happens due to the high costs. The ‘tuna fish museum’ is a reminder of the past, tells about the experiences of the former tuna fisher men en shows their violent lives.
Nowadays fishermen still sail out daily to bring in fresh fish from the sea. This is also the most important source of income for the inhabitants and it guarantees fresh meals with fish for the tourists.
Nature
Mother nature has been very generous for Stintino. A beautiful place as Stintino is almost indescribable. The beach ‘La Pelosa’ is one of the most beautiful beaches of Italy. The fine white beaches, the gorgeous blue colour of the sea and water so clear that even the most pure emerald and the most transparent sapphire seem insignificant!
Around the island Asinara flamingos settle during their breeding season. An impressive phenomenon. Twice a year, cows (they even know how to swim!) are brought to the island to graze. All this makes Stintino a unique natural paradise.
Tourism
Many accommodations in and around the historical town gives everyone a nice and relaxed holiday feeling during the entire year.
The ports…where the fishermen sail out daily and return with fresh fish.
Events in the high season consist of folklore shows, music events and for the sailors among us, the well known sailing regatta with the typical ‘Vela Lattina’ in the last week of August.
Also many sports are available: wind surfing, diving, sailing, horseback riding, and tennis.
Villas
The villas that we offer are located in a villa district just outside Stintino: ‘Golf & Country Paradise’. It is a quiet neighbourhood close to the beach. In the high season a bus will leave every half hour that can bring you to the centre or to one of the many beaches in the area.
The villas have a luxurious and comfortable interior and have all their own parking area and swimming pool (the smaller gardens have a Jacuzzi instead of a swimming pool).
