Sardinia is a beautiful island in the Mediterranean sea, west of the mainland of Italy. Sardinia lies 12 kilometers south of Corsica, separated by the street of Bonifacio.
Together with the islands: Maddalena, Caprera, Asinara and Sant’Antioco, Sardinia forms the ‘Regione Autonoma Sardegna’. Well known cities are: the capital city Cagliari, Nuoro, Olbia, Oristano and Sassari. The island has 1,700,000 inhabitants. The surface area of Sardinia is 24000km2 and characterised by kilometers of coastline.
With over 1800km of coast…a mecca for sailors, divers and other water sports. Beautiful sandy beaches, rocky bays, azure-blue water and sun…lots of sun: Sardinia is a fantastic holiday paradise!
The inland is mainly hilly, even mountainous and in certain areas unspoilt. The highest mountains are the Punta la Marmora (1834m) and the Monte Bruncu Spina (1829m). These two mountains belong to the Gennargentu mountain range which runs from the north to the south of the island trough the inlands. The mountains are grown with densely grown forests consisting of: corktrees, eucalyptus trees, juniper trees and olive trees.
It is pleasant to stay on Sardinia throughout the whole year, with an average temperature in the summer between 25°C and 30°C. The winters are mild; an average temperature of 14°C. Especially in the spring and autumn the temperatures are ideal to discover this gorgeous island!
Sardinian cuisine is very variable. Along the coast are mainly fish restaurants whereas the inlands are predominated by the traditional shepherd’s kitchen; roast mutton, pork , sheep-cheese (pecorino) and the best wines. A typical liquor of Sardinia is “Mirto”, made of the myrtle-berry. These bushes grow all over Sardinia.
